WHY GRASS FED IS BEST
By Jo Robinson
When ruminant animals are fed large amounts of grain, their meat and milk products are less desirable for human health. One of the most significant drawbacks is that their meat has more of the “bad” fat that clogs our arteries and less of the “good” fat that enhances our health.
New research suggests that “Eat less grain fed meat” would be better advice. When cattle are allowed to remain on pasture, their meat has about the same amount of fat as wild game or a skinless chicken breast. When red meat is this lean, it actually lowers your cholesterol levels. This means that even people with high cholesterol levels can enjoy grass fed critters.
Switching from grain fed to grass fed meat and dairy products gives you a wealth of health benefits. First of all, you avoid all the synthetic hormones, antibiotics, pesticide residues, and questionable additives found in conventionally raised animals. But just as important, you get these added nutritional advantages:
- Less fat
- Fewer calories
- More omega-3 fatty acids
- More beta-carotene
- More CLA
- A lower risk of E. coli
It’s important to keep in mind that all of the six benefits listed above are the direct result of raising animals on fresh pasture. Products from animals fed significant amounts of grain will not have these benefits—even when the grain has been organically grown.
The grain itself is the problem, not the way it’s been treated. Whenever ruminant animals are taken off their original diet of grass and switched to an artificial diet of grains and “byproduct feedstuff,” their meat and dairy products are less beneficial for our health. Keeping them on pasture helps protect our health as well as theirs.
What is pastured poultry? We use a day range system for our pastured poultry. They are in a large electric netted area that can be moved to fresh pasture. They eat about thirty percent of their diet in grass, the rest is bugs and worms but they are not true ruminants and must be fed a supplement of legumes and grains.
Because they are raised outdoors in fresh air, plenty of sunshine and are moved to fresh pasture everyday, our animals are much healthier and happier. They don’t require heavy medications or debeaking. They are never over crowded. Our customers tell us it is the leanest, juiciest, plumpest, best tasting chicken they’ve ever had!
The Best Tasting Pork!
We started raising Berkshire hogs in 2010 and the vote is in! Our customers tell us it is the juiciest, tastiest most tender pork they have ever eaten! If you are tired of dry tasteless, tough pork, come back to where the flavor is. Pasture raised Berkshire pork
